Alberta Cannabis

Cannabis is now legal in Alberta, following the passage of federal Bill C-45 on October 17, 2018. Canada had prohibited cannabis production, distribution, and consumption since 1923.

Some jurisdictions, such as Manitoba and Saskatchewan, operate cannabis retail stores through publicly-owned retail monopolies. In Alberta, on the other hand, private firms are allowed to sell cannabis at licensed retail establishments.

The AGLC is the sole supplier of cannabis in Alberta. Private retailers must purchase their inventory from the province’s wholesaler, the AGLC. Within Alberta, the government is solely responsible for e-commerce cannabis sales.

In contrast to sluggish rollouts in places like Ontario, Alberta now has the most cannabis dispensaries per capita. Some publications have referred to Alberta as the “pot capital of Canada” as a consequence of the province’s successful marijuana legalization.
